Outlook:
As the most famous track in NASCAR, Daytona needs no introduction. A win at the Daytona 500 can instantly turn a driver into a household name and forever cement someone's legacy. Couple the legendary stature of the track with the tight racing, tight finishes and giant wrecks, and Daytona provides one of the greatest spectacles in NASCAR.
Last year's Daytona 500 was no exception, as Ryan Newman used a push from teammate Kurt Busch to storm past Tony Stewart on the final lap to pick up the win. It was another heartbreaking near miss at NASCAR's crown jewel for Stewart and the end of a long winless drought for Newman. Ironically, the two will be teammates this season.
The July race was not to be outdone. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards were battling side by side when a caution came out during a green-white-checkered attempt. NASCAR officials had to go to replays to determine who was in front at the time of caution, and Busch was ultimately credited with the win.
Like any restrictor-plate track, Daytona is a nightmare for fantasy owners. One small mistake by any driver on the track can instantly lay waste to an entire fantasy squad. Thanks to the threat of the "Big One," no driver is a safe pick, and the best strategy is to use the drivers that have shown a tendency to run up front late in the race.
Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have all won at the track and have finished in the top 10 in at least half their starts. With the exception of Johnson, all have won multiple races. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick have finishing averages of 15th or better, and Clint Bowyer's 12.3 average finish is the best of any driver. Robby Gordon is a potential sleeper pick after finishing inside the top 8 at both races last year.
